Generally, every human body needs protein. Protein is one of the essential micro-nutrient that our body uses to build, repair, and maintain our body’s tissues and organs. And a diabetic body is no different. Typically, people with diabetes don’t need any extra protein than people who don’t have diabetes. It may seem like a high protein diet should make difference in your blood sugar regulation but in a true sense, it doesn’t. However, there are times when less protein is better. In any case, if a diabetic consumes more protein than needed, it can lead to higher levels of insulin which can further increase their insulin resistance and worsen their diabetes. No, to put it simply nothing is better than natural proteins that we obtain from our diet. At this point, we all have understood that protein is quite important for a diabetic. So what’s the difference between getting protein from a natural source and protein supplements? The major difference here is the ratio of carbs and protein present in it. For instance look at the labels of commercially available diabetic-friendly products, they have almost 45-55 grams of carbs. They should be called carb supplements instead of protein supplements. They don’t help to fill in the protein gap and lead to an insulin response which increases insulin resistance and makes your diabetes worse. So it’s very important to read the labels before getting your hand on any kind of supplements.
How to find the right protein supplement?
If you are a non-vegetarian then try to stick to natural ways of getting proteins, through eggs, chicken, etc. But if you are a vegetarian and you feel the need to opt for a protein supplement then choose carefully. Read the labels properly and choose a supplement that has less than 15% carbs in it. Do your research, find out what’s best for you, what your body needs, and then make an informed decision. This can help you in balancing your protein-carb ratio and manage your diabetes effectively.
